WEATHER
Learn about how to operate PortaSaunas in all weather conditions
Can I use PortaSauna in the winter?
Absolutely! The triple-layer insulated fabric of the PortaSauna HEX retains heat even in freezing temperatures. It can reach 80-100°C, even when it’s as cold as -12°C outside.
Can I use PortaSauna in strong winds?
In windy conditions, we recommend anchoring it with sandbags, bricks, or cinder blocks. Ground stakes and guide ropes are also included for extra reinforcement.
Can I leave PortaSauna outside permanently?
Yes, but we recommend using the included waterproof cover for protection. If left outside long-term, extreme weather conditions may affect durability. Storing it indoors when not in use will prolong its lifespan.
What kind of weather is not suitable?
🚫 Not recommended in:
- Heavy rain (the sauna is water-resistant, not fully waterproof)
- High winds (risk of chimney backflow)
- Heavy snowfall (may block the chimney)
MAINTAINENCE

Does PortaSauna require cleaning?
Minimal maintenance is needed! Moisture naturally evaporates due to the high heat. Simply empty the ash tray and clean the chimney every 3-4 uses to maintain airflow.
How can I look after my PortaSauna tent and make it last longer?
Since zippers are frequently used, apply silicone spray to them to prevent damage.
The zipper handle gets hot, so attach a string or tape to it.
Always follow instructions to increase longevity of the PortaSauna products.
How much does it cost to run a PortaSauna?
The running cost of a PortaSauna session ranges between 50p to £1 / hour depending on firewood type, local pricing, and purchase quantity.

PortaSauna is designed for safe ventilation, but follow these precautions:
✅ Keep the tent’s air vents open
✅ Ensure the chimney is clear before lighting
✅ Only burn dry wood—no treated wood or charcoal
✅ Use a CO monitor for extra safety
How to handle the heat safely?
Wood-burning stoves reach high temperatures, so be sure to use heat-resistant gloves when adding firewood.
When adding water to sauna, be careful not to come into contact with high-temperature steam.
Be careful not to touch the stove when entering or exiting the sauna tent.
Can children use a PortaSauna?
Yes, but only under supervision. Children are more sensitive to heat, so monitor their time inside and ensure they stay hydrated.
STOVE
Learn about how to maintain and operate the PortaSauna Stove
What is the best way to operate the PortaSauna Stove?
Best practices for heating:
- Keep the air vent fully open for proper airflow.
- Start with fire starter squares and dry hardwood (30-40 cm logs).
- Close the stove door for 15 minutes before adding more wood.
- Adjust airflow and wood supply to control heat levels.
Is it okay for the stove to turn red hot?
Yes! The stove and chimney may glow red at high temperatures. This is safe, but if concerned, reduce airflow to slow the burn rate.
How do I maintain my PortaSauna Stove?
Proper care of your wood-fired sauna stove will extend its lifespan and ensure safe, efficient heating.
Follow these maintenance tips to keep your stove in top condition:
Keep Your Sauna Stove Dry
- Store indoors when not in use for extended periods to prevent rust and erosion. If leaving the sauna tent set up for regular use, cover the stove with a waterproof cover.
- Use the PortaSauna waterproof cover to Cover the flue hole to prevent rainwater from dripping onto the stove,
Water Use & Steam Safety
- Only pour water onto the sauna stones—never directly onto the stove. Water on hot metal can cause thermal shock, leading to warping and cracking.
- Never use seawater. The salt can cause severe corrosion to the stove and chimney.
- For infusions, use ice balls infused with essential oils—never apply essential oils directly to the stove as they can ignite.
Cooling Down the Stove
- Allow the stove to cool naturally after each session. Do not throw water on it, as sudden temperature changes can warp the metal.
Regular Cleaning & Ash Removal
- Remove ash only when the stove is completely cooled. Built-up ash retains moisture, leading to stove corrosion and less efficient heating.
-Check the chimney regularly to ensure proper airflow and prevent blockages.
By following these guidelines, you’ll keep your PortaSauna stove in peak condition, ensuring a long-lasting and enjoyable sauna experience!
Why is there smoke coming out of the stove door?
If using the stove for the first time, run a pre-burn for an hour without stones to cure the paint.
If smoke continues, check for chimney blockages or air leaks, and ensure proper airflow.
How do I get my PortaSauna hot?
To maximize heat:
- Use dry hardwood (softwood burns too fast).
- Anchor the tent properly to minimize cold air gaps.
- Allow stones to heat for 30-60 minutes before entering.
- Limit water pouring to every 10 minutes, as excess steam can lower the overall temperature.
How do I setup my sauna stove for the first time?
For the initial use of the sauna, conduct a pre-combustion or ‘dry firing’ process for about an hour without the sauna stones, until there is no detectable odor or smoke.
This is necessary because the paint on the stove may not be fully cured, leading to the emission of smells and smoke from the stove’s surface.
If smoke is observed due to any holes or similar issues, cease using the sauna and send it for maintenance.
Can the stove warp over time?
Some warping is normal due to high heat exposure, but it does not affect performance.
If severe, get in touch with our team for support.
How much firewood is needed?
We recommend using 30cm-long dry hardwood logs for the best burn efficiency. The exact amount depends on the wood type and moisture content, but typically:

COMPARISON
What makes your tents different from regular camping tents for using as a sauna or sleeping overnight?
Regular camping tents have chemicals on them for protection from sun and fire.
These chemicals can be harmful if the tent gets very hot, like in a sauna, and can hurt your lungs.
These tents also have materials and zippers that might not work well in high heat.
Our tents are made especially for saunas. They can handle very high temperatures and don’t have harmful chemicals.
This means they are safe to breathe in. Our tents have doors that swing open, making it easy to get in and out, so you won’t get stuck in a hot sauna tent.
We make each tent by hand with strong materials, so they last long and work well in tough conditions.
What's the difference between Infrared vs Wood-Fired saunas?
PortaSauna is a portable wood-fired sauna tent which means:
✔ Authentic sauna experience – reaches 90-100°C with real steam (löyly).
✔ Safe materials – no toxic coatings, unlike camping tents.
✔ Versatile – use it anywhere outdoors, whether at home, the beach, or a campsite.
